Sankoh sticks out

The rebels are blocking a new UN plan to get peace efforts moving again

Back in the thick of things is Corporal Foday Sankoh, leader of the Revolutionary United Front. Three months after signing a peace agreement in Abidjan with President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah (AC Vol 37 No 24), Sankoh is under pressure from Kabbah's government, the United Nations and even some members of his own RUF. The country's conflicts are many-sided, involving dissidents in the government army, the south-eastern 'Kamajor' fighters and armed robbers, as well as the RUF (AC Vol 37 No 22). Sankoh and his friends are shrewd political operators. He wants the final word on when and how the agreement is to be implemented and threatens chaos if he doesn't get his way.
