Obiang's goals

Hosting the Africa Cup of Nations has enabled President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo to improve his country's image and raise his regional profile. At the opening ceremony of the football tournament on 17 January, he boasted that his enemies had been proved wrong. After the intended host, Morocco, pulled out over fears about Ebola, Equatorial Guinea had only 50 days to prepare but, as it had hosted the competition in 2012, the infrastructure was already there. New turf was flown in from Spain.
