Ethnically and politically, the Rainbow alliance is multicoloured – but it could still break up

As he heads into the sunset, President Daniel arap Moi has to face the fact that his handpicked successor, Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta (AC Vol 43 No 15), may lose the forthcoming election to Mwai Kibaki, of the new National Alliance Rainbow Coalition (NARC, AC Vol 43 No 18). He doesn't seem all that worried, though. Moi is reluctant to retire and told a large crowd assembled for his Kenyatta Day (20 October) address at Nyayo Stadium, Nairobi, that it was a pity that 'I am leaving office after having gained so much experience on this job'.
