The CCM's determination to win the Zanzibar election has undermined stability by leaving the opposition out in the cold

President Ali Mohamed Shein begins his second five-year term leading a single party government for Zanzibar and his Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM) is the sole occupant of the House of Representatives. His opponent in the original poll on 25 October, the Civic United Front's Seif Shariff Hamad, has seen his fate shift dramatically. Having spent five years as First Vice-President in a coalition government he is now out and his CUF is absent from the House.
