Post-election gunfire

Widespread anger was a feature of public reaction to President Denis Sassou-Nguesso's widely discredited re-election last month but few expected it to turn into armed violence. On 4 April, men with Kalashnikovs attacked police stations and a mayor's office in southern Brazzaville. Seventeen people, twelve of them attackers, were killed, said the government.
