Somalia

A hopeful view in London…

The London Conference on Somalia opened with exhortations and hope for the future. Promises abounded

President Mohamed Abdullah Mohamed 'Farmajo' joined a host of dignitaries at the third London Somalia Conference on 11 May to endorse and applaud his highly ambitious 'New Partnership Pact' with the countries supporting reconstruction and the fight against Al Haraka al Shabaab al Mujahideen. Many heard Farmajo promise to defeat the Islamist insurgents of Al Shabaab in two years, including United Kingdom Prime Minister Theresa May and her Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson; May's Turkish counterpart, Binali Yildirim, head of the ruling Adalet ve Kalkinma Partisi (Justice and Development Party); United States Defense Secretary James Mattis; Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta; Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni; Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn of Ethiopia and Chad's Moussa Faki Mahamat, the new African Union Chairperson.
