The Sudan Liberation Army appears to have a new leader. SLA members say that 'democratic consultations' are under way but the money is on the Chief of Staff, Jeddu Shagoor, who earned his post by showing courage under fire, colleagues say. He is popular and only 32. After weeks of speculation about splits in the SLA, in the first week of February, Commander-in-Chief, Juma Mohamed Haggar, and a dozen commanders renounced the exiled political leadership. Chairman Abdel Wahid Mohamed Ahmed el Nur and Secretary General Minni Arkou Minnawi no longer represented the commanders in the field, they declared.
