Lightning strike

A series of opposition victories against the National Islamic Front government has prompted Khartoum to delay 'negotiations' in Nairobi under the auspices of the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development. In a lightning attack (reportedly seven minutes long) the National Democratic Alliance has recaptured a key base near Kassala. In an operation codenamed 'Lions of the East', Beja Congress, Democratic Unionist Party, Sudan Alliance Forces and Sudan People's Liberation Army took Telkuk on 9 May, six months after it had fallen to the NIF.
