President Mursi's soft coup

The Muslim Brothers consolidate power and find some military support, while the media suffers a crackdown

When President Mohamed Mursi retired the two most powerful military officers on 12 August, he strengthened the Muslim Brotherhood’s grip on power but the move also seems to have won support among both officers and ranks (See Soldier against Muslim Brother & The ball is in the court). It is less clear how far this military support marks a shift in ideological orientation, amid claims that some senior officers and bureaucrats are undeclared supporters of the Ikhwan (Brothers). Yet it certainly reflects hopes that change in the senior officer corps could spread the military’s multibillion-dollar largesse more widely.
