In what is believed to be the first such case ever, a Sudanese doctor has been charged in Scotland with committing torture in the Sudan. On 5 September, Tayside Police arrested Mohamed Ahmed Mahjoub, known from his student days as 'El Fil' ('the Elephant') and charged him under the 1988 Criminal Justice Act, Section 134 ('Torture'), sub-section two. Dr. Mohamed, 38, previously a postgraduate medical student in Dundee, appeared at a closed hearing at Dundee Sheriff Court on 8 September and was bailed after surrendering his passport and being ordered to report fortnightly to police.
