Watching Big Brother

As politicians fall like ninepins to the Anti-Corruption Task Force, the President turns to TV

When Cherise Makubale beat eleven contestants this month in Big Brother Africa, an international 'reality television' show avidly followed in Zambia, President Levy Mwanawasa immediately appointed her a Roving Ambassador with full diplomatic status. Before TV took over from reality, the President was in deep trouble. He is up against opponents within his own Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) who remain loyal to his predecessor Frederick Chiluba. He also faces strikes, discontent and general dissatisfaction, not to mention disfavour among the donor countries and organisations whose money has kept his government going.
