Risky hunt for a new leader

The search is on for an interim president but so far allies of the ousted Bozizé and his corrupt former ministers are making all the running

Politicians allied to the discredited former President François Bozizé, along with ministers most associated with rampant corruption, may end up as the main beneficiaries of the power vacuum created by the resignation of Michel Djotodia, according to sources in Paris and Bangui. Djotodia was forced out of the interim presidency on 9 January and replaced by Alexandre-Ferdinand Nguendet, who is presiding over the 135-member Conseil national de la transition (CNT), made up of members of the National Assembly, which will pick a new interim president. Nguendet has until 23 January. The new interim president will be in charge until elections – in which he or she will not be allowed to stand – are held.
