Ripples from Kidal

As retired air force Colonel Major Ba N'Dao settles in as the new Defence Minister, a parliamentary investigation begins into the rout of the army at Kidal on 21 May. N'Dao replaces Soumeylou Boubèye Maïga, who was sacrificed to deflect blame for the disaster from President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta and Prime Minister Moussa Mara, many in Bamako believe. Maïga has promised the inquiry full disclosure, 'even the text messages sent during the events at Kidal'. He appears confident of being fully vindicated.
