Clash of the kings

Fighting for control over revenues and security, President Tshisekedi is in a standoff with supporters of his predecessor Joseph Kabila

Senior officials in the two coalitions which run the country – the Front commun pour le Congo (FCC) and the Cap pour le changement (CACH) – are at a stalemate. For several days in late February, they tried to hammer out agreements over top jobs in the regulatory agencies and state-owned enterprises (SOEs) but failed dismally. This reflects the national clash between President Félix Tshisekedi and his predecessor Joseph Kabila over control of the money and security agencies. For now, through the power of his allies in the administration, Kabila wields control over mining revenues the army and the intelligence agencies.
