The Briefing is researched and written by two highly experienced and independent consultants on South Africa's politics and economy.

Alexander Johnston was Professor of Political Science at the University of Natal, Durban until 2002. As an academic, he published widely on the politics and international relations of South Africa. From 2003 until 2008, he was Senior Associate at the Centre for Development and Enterprise, a business-funded, public policy research and advocacy organisation in Johannesburg. At CDE, he managed research and wrote reports on all aspects of public policy in South Africa.

Jesmond Blumenfeld has taught economics at the Universities of South Africa, Witwatersrand, Brunel and Oxford. From 1989-1991 and 1999-2002, he was Convenor of the Southern Africa Study Group at the Royal Institute of International Affairs in London. As an academic and an independent consultant to international business, he has written for over 30 years about the political economy of South and Southern Africa.
