Another year, another plot

Peace remains a long way off for President Gbagbo and his divided opponents

Despite the repeated declarations of peace, Côte d'Ivoire's crisis is still far from solution. As the conflict heads into its second year, the splits between President Laurent Gbagbo's opponents are deepening; if Gbagbo can stand his ground, his opponents may tear themselves to pieces before elections can be organised. The latest insult to the respected Prime Minister Seydou Diarra is the claim by Gbagbo's Front Populaire Ivoirien (FPI) that Diarra was involved in the latest coup plot attributed to Staff Sergeant Ibrahim Coulibaly, known as 'IB', who was arrested in Paris on 23 August (AC Vol 44 No 17).
