The new technology helped combat fraud but old-fashioned politics determined the outcome

The accolades heaped on Attahiru Jega and his team at the Independent National Electoral Commission for organising the country's most credible elections to date make much of the use of new technology. Although the biometric elector registration and accreditation greatly helped Jega's officials, they would have achieved little without the independent but remarkably diplomatic Chairman of INEC and determined efforts by civic activists monitoring votes and numbers across the country. Some of those activists now warn that giving too much kudos to election technology could encourage complacency and weaken future monitoring efforts.
