Ogbeh walks out

The ruling party Chairman's resignation is upsetting plans for the election in 2007

President Olusegun Obasanjo is due to step down when his term ends in 2007. The succession that he is planning has been upset by a public falling out with the Chairman of the governing People's Democratic Party, Audu Ogbeh. The row was both about election strategy and short-term political tactics. For now, Obasanjo has won and Ogbeh will resign as party Chairman on 28 February. Some say the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission will investigate allegations about Ogbeh's management of party funds; others allege that Ogbeh had made too many enemies and was worried about his security. One source suggests that his opponents threatened him with the 'Bola Ige treatment'. Attorney General Ige was shot dead after receiving threats in December 2001.
