Recent threats to Egyptian and Tunisian writers reflect a growing confrontation between Islamists and other Muslims. Egyptian philosopher Sa'id Mahmoud el Gomeni has said he'll give up writing about Islamic religion and history because of death threats. Several of his books critically examine Islamic history and deconstruct the version claimed by fundamentalists; he also writes a weekly column for Roz el Yousif magazine.
