Politicians are scurrying to prepare for the country's second multi-party general elections: President Joaquim Chissano confirmed on 31 August that polling would take place on 3-4 December (probably in the rain, making quagmires of rural roads (AC Vol 40 No 13). Registration of electors has been going on since July and ends on 17 September. Nearly half an estimated 8.3 million eligible electors signed up during the first month. Premier Pascoal Mocumbi complains this is far less than expected.
