Umaru Yar’Adua is short on leadership – just when Nigeria needs it

There was little fanfare for Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s first anniversary as Nigeria’s President on 29 May. His quiet leadership infuriates his opponents and bewilders those accustomed to rulers anxious to prove their stature. After a generation of disappointment, his supporters maintain that the shift offers the best hope for a better Nigeria. In a round of interviews, the President acknowledged that his government is marked more by promises than delivery.
