The war against the amnesty

The presidential election, the oil trade and community peace deals are at risk in the latest Niger Delta conflicts

Leaders of the Ayakoroma community in Delta State saw the violence coming. They warned the military Joint Task Force in mid-November that their town was in the crossfire between the JTF and ‘General’ John Togo’s Niger Delta Liberation Force (AC Vol 51 No 23). Ekanpou Enewaridideke of the Ijaw People’s Congress declared that Ayakoroma was ‘diametrically opposed to militancy in any form’ and said stray bullets were already flying. Togo’s base nearby had been attacked on 17 November by the JTF, leaving nine soldiers and an unknown number of armed rebels dead. Some said Togo had set his camp ablaze and moved with his men to Israel Barracks on the Atlantic coast.
