The United Nations Security Council will renew the mandate of the UN Mission to Eritrea and Ethiopia next week but the border remains unresolved and there is concern over mounting costs (AC Vol 44 No 15). Most Eritrean opposition parties, many in Premier Meles Zenawi's Tigray People's Liberation Front, much of the Tigray population and the Catholic Bishop of Adigrat on the border refuse to accept losing Badme or northern Irob.
