The 3 August announcement that Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Mohamed Lamari had resigned for health reasons (for treatment in Spain for an eye condition) came after weeks of negotiation. The Presidency let it be known that President Abdelaziz Bouteflika had repeatedly asked Lamari to stay. The public version was leaked to the biggest circulation newspaper, El Khabar: according to its sources, 'after a more than two hour meeting, President Bouteflika was forced to accept Lamari's resignation'.
