The failure of trade talks in Cancún is bad news for West African cotton farmers

Some campaigners hailed the collapse of the World Trade Organisation talks in Mexico as a triumph for developing countries' new-found assertiveness. However, their failure dashed the hopes of West African cotton producers for an end to harmful subsidies. Cotton producers have recently become more militant in campaigning against handouts to European and United States' farmers (AC Vol 43 No 20), and Benin's President Mathieu Kérékou went to Brussels on 7-10 September to lobby personally for West African producers.
