By resigning from the United Democratic Front, which carried him to the presidency last year, President Bingu wa Mutharika has triggered political confusion (AC Vol 46 No 2). Politicians must now decide which is worse: the risk of missing out on jobs and on development funds for their constituencies or angering Bingu's predecessor, Bakili Muluzi, who's still UDF President, and losing his patronage network.
