The threat of a boycott may be the opposition's most powerful weapon in next year's elections

With the present rules and political climate opposition parties, even in an alliance, stand no chance of ousting President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and his National Resistance Movement in the elections due in March. Having successfully campaigned for the reintroduction of multiparty politics, the opposition is pressing for more reform to produce fairer elections. Even then, Museveni's personal popularity in the rural areas is such that he would still be favourite to win after two decades in power. He would, at least, face a massive opposition presence in parliament and new constraints on his presidential powers.
