Two of those most exposed to any possible Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front retribution for sharing their opinions and information with United States diplomats are army generals: Brigadier General Herbert Chingono, who went on a training course in the USA in 2000, and Major Gen. The pair briefed US Ambassador Charles Ray, himself a former US Army officer, on how the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) divided into three: thuggish party-orientated elements, those opposed to the way things were going and those sitting on the fence awaiting developments.
