Stifling dissent

The murder of human rights campaigner Floribert Chebeya Bahizire in a Kinshasa police building in June 2010 has come back to haunt President Joseph Kabila and may now threaten his hosting of the 14th Francophonie summit, scheduled for October in Kinshasa. Police officers under the orders of Kabila’s close ally General John Numbi Banza Tambo silenced the leader of the Voix des sans Voix (Voice of the Voiceless) by taping plastic bags over his head until he suffocated. Belgian film-maker Thierry Michel is making a documentary about the murder and released a document containing a witness’s observations after he was deported from Congo on 8 July.
