Relations with the European Union are cooling sharply. EU election observers roundly criticised the 15 May general elections, infuriating Premier Meles Zenawi. The head of the EU Election Observation Mission (EOM), Ana Gomes, said on 25 August, just before leaving for Europe, that the polls had failed to satisfy international standards or Ethiopians' aspirations for democracy (AC Vol 46 No 16). The African Union had praised the elections.
