An awkward embrace

The ovation given to Deputy President Jacob Zuma at last month's national conference of the Congress of South African Trade Unions points again to the very odd nature of the Tripartite Alliance between the governing African National Congress on one side and Cosatu and the SA Communist Party on the other. Cosatu rolled out the red carpet for Zuma; it sees him as President Thabo Mbeki's rival and a candidate for the national presidency in 2009.
