Khartoum's diplomats are lobbying hard at the UN to block an arrest warrant for President Omer for genocide and war crimes

The diplomatic dance at the United Nations General Assembly is intensifying over the arrest warrants against Sudanese President Omer Hassan Ahmed el Beshir sought by the Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Luis Moreno-Ocampo. We hear the Court is confident of its evidence and believes the judges are likely to back Moreno-Ocampo’s request for a warrant for President Omer’s arrest for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur (AC Vol 49 No 16). At stake for the ruling National Congress (NC, aka National Islamic Front) is President Omer’s freedom and the Islamist regime’s survival. Khartoum is trying to persuade as many UN member-governments as possible to support a deferment of the warrant.
