President Sarkozy faces awkward questions about his stopovers in Brazzaville, Kinshasa and Niamey this month

The legacy of Françafrique - the opaque network of commercial and political ties between Paris and its African allies - continues to haunt French President Nicolas Sarkozy's government, despite his promise of a 'rupture' with the past. Sarkozy's itinerary and mission for his coming African trip later this month are clear. In Niger, he wants to challenge China's recent gains in the uranium business with offers of more attractive financial terms and technological assistance. The mission to Congo-Kinshasa is more complex.
