Berkeley's Center for African Studies was established in 1979 as an interdisciplinary research center to support basic research and training of scholars. The Centre of African Studies was established in 1965 and supports teaching on Africa at the University of Cambridge through its library and through its seminar series. It also acts as a platform for interdisciplinary research, bringing the University's Africanists together with scholars from African, American, and European universities.

The Centre of African Studies was founded in 1962. It was one of the original African Studies Centres in the UK founded on the recommendation of the Hayter Commission.

The University of London's Centre of African Studies is the largest centre of expertise on Africa outside Africa. Founded in 1965 at the School of Oriental and African Studies, where its administration is still based, since 1991 the Centre has assumed formal responsibility for co-ordinating, stimulating and promoting interdisciplinary study, research and discussion on Africa within the University; and promoting a wider awareness of African issues.

SOAS is a college of the University of London and the only Higher Education institution in the UK specialising in the study of Asia, Africa and the Near and Middle East.
