Fates of the opposition

President Denis Sassou-Nguesso seems in several minds about what to do with the opposition. Some face show trials after years of incarceration, while others may go on their way. One of the lucky ones is Frédéric Bintsamou, also known as Pastor Ntumi, the former militia leader who long ago made his peace with Sassou. Last December he signed a ceasefire, ending nearly 20 months of fighting in the Pool region, which surrounds Brazzaville. The joint commission charged with implementing the peace agreement is expecting to lift the threat of arrest on Bintsamou in exchange for a guarantee of peace. Sassou has no option if he wants to keep the peace, pundits are saying.
