Winning the election was the easy bit for Faure Gnassingbé. Securing international acceptance is quite a different matter

Outright victory in the first round of the presidential election came for the incumbent President Faure Gnassingbé with 72% of the vote on an impressive 76% turnout. The President has high hopes of legitimising and extending his 15-year presidency. He opted not to seek foreign funding for the organisation of the polls, gambling it would help him avoid foreign censure.
