The new president needs to make changes at the top of government to consolidate her position as factions vie for favour

Only two days elapsed between the announcement of late President John Magufuli's death and the swearing in of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, quelling fears that Magufuli loyalists would try to prevent her elevation. On 20 March, the party's Central Committee announced that a Party Conference would be called 'as soon as possible' to elect her as party chairperson. While the constitution has been respected and party tradition maintained, there remains uncertainty within Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), and the administration as factions jockey for position. Constitutionally, Hassan will be allowed to run in the next election, and so faces potentially nine years in power.
