Opposition activists are urging the country’s most powerful monarchy to take a tougher stance against the ruling party

As concerns grow about the health of the country’s most powerful monarch, Kabaka (King) Ronald Muwenda Mutebi, 69, a dispute has opened up about the Buganda kingdom taking a more assertive political role ahead of the 2026 elections. Buganda monarchists are divided over how to manage the kingdom’s succession as well as on the question of whether it should be taking on the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) more directly.
