Ronald Lamola – trying to win back friends

‘We must separate facts from fake news as we deal with the protest in South Africa,’ International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola told delegates at a Commonwealth ministerial meeting on 16 June. Lamola has been tasked with limiting the damage to South Africa’s reputation after deadly anti-migrant attacks. Lamola owes his rapid rise – appointed Justice Minister immediately after entering the National Assembly in May 2019 and moved to International Relations after the 2024 elections – to his close relationship with President Cyril Ramaphosa. Yet he has been slow to mount a public relations response to the protests.
