A gold-mining conviction shows how the courts have become a weapon in the fight between Ghana’s two big parties

Few doubted that Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, an opposition chieftain in Ashanti known for flashing gold bars on television, had cut corners in his mining business; fewer still think his 20-year sentence was purely about the law. His lawyers’ 28 July appeal, citing 20 grounds including an improper application of ‘veil piercing’, is unlikely to be the last word in a saga that has already produced a plea for presidential mercy and a parallel bank-fraud case adjourned to 27 August.
