Cutting rivalries

The coming battle between two gemstone plutocrats in London’s High Court could embarrass Angola’s secretive diamond marketing organisation, Angola Selling Corporation (Ascorp). Uzbekistan-born Israeli diamond magnate Lev Leviev, who has major interests in Angola and Namibia, is pitted against his former ally, Russian-Israeli oligarch Arkady Gaydamak (AC Vol 42 No 11). Gaydamak is suing Leviev, alleging that he swindled him out of commission and dividends from Ascorp averaging US$3 million a month since 2004. A four-day trial is scheduled for May.
