Who owns what?

Vast sums of money and political loyalties are at stake as the land clashes spread

President Uhuru Kenyatta has belatedly moved to stem the violence over land ownership in Coast Province but the delay has allowed conflict to become entrenched. His 31 July order for the state to repossess 70% of land allocated to developers came on the day he met East African leaders to discuss the massive Lamu development project and the day before signing a major contract with a Chinese company. The contract with the Hong Kong-listed China Communications Construction Company Limited ('We are building a connected world') is worth US$478.9 million and is for three new berths at Lamu Port.
