Strikes and successions

ZANU faces factional infighting among would-be successors to Nkomo and a rash of public service strikes

Two issues dominate the political landscape – the government' s much criticised handling of the doctors' and nurses' strike and who is going to succeed the ailing Joshua Nkomo as Vice-President. Although senior Zimbabwe African National Union- Patriotic Front officials say neither issue is on the formal agenda at the party's national conference in Bulawayo on 14 December, both issues will be extensively aired informally. And both issues are being seen as ways for the party's younger generation to extend its influence in an organisation still largely in the grip of people in their 60s and 70s.
