Frelimo squares the vote

Happenstance as well as outright vote manipulation is boosting the ruling party’s general election campaign

As many as 1,000 people may have died in the devastation that Cyclone Idai wreaked on the port city of Beira, which made tens of thousands homeless. Yet the consequences – an avalanche of emergency aid, international sympathy, leniency from the IMF and other side-effects – have improved the prospects of the ruling Frente de Libertação de Moçambique (Frelimo) in next month's general election.
