Fighting within the ranks

The EFF leadership is facing challenges from within amid allegations of corruption at the top of the party

Julius Malema's Economic Freedom Fighters has always prided itself on being a cohesive unit speaking with one voice but with a month to go before the party's elective conference, cracks are showing in the façade. Dali Mpofu, the party's high-profile and charismatic chairperson, looks set to challenge Malema for the top post. 'The leadership battle is real, no matter how Malema wants to downplay it. Dali is a popular figure and he's been around the politcal scene,' an EFF insider told Africa Confidential. The divisions are being fuelled by corruption accusations leaked to the media.
