The DA's race dilemma

The main opposition party is wracked by divisions over 'affirmative action' after its black leaders suddenly resign

The departure of both Mmusi Maimane as leader of the Democratic Alliance and Herman Mashaba as mayor of Johannesburg has sent shock waves through the main opposition party and started a soul-searching process set to culminate at its annual conference in April. Senior DA figures believe Maimane's leadership was a failure and repairs are urgently needed. On 17 November, Maimane's ally and deputy John Steenhuisen was picked to lead the party until a new leadership contest at the conference.
