Intrigue at State House

A coterie of colourful advisors around President Lungu is competing for influence and contracts

Tussles for supremacy among President Edgar Lungu's key advisors have claimed scalps in his ever-smaller inner circle. One of the most important was that of former journalist Amos Chanda, who was the President's spokesman for four years until his sudden exit from State House in June. On 15 November his fall from grace was confirmed when the Drug Enforcement Commission arrested him on suspicion of corruption in public office. No observer in Lusaka believes this could have occurred if he had remained in good odour with the President. As Chanda's star has waned, that of his great rival, Kaizar Zulu, has climbed ever higher, ending a long period out in the cold.
