Ambition runs out of gas

Like leaders across the region, President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani is preoccupied with the fight to contain Covid-19, of which there have, so far, been seven confirmed cases and one death. At the heart of the government's response is the creation of a US$70 million 'solidarity fund'. But the wider economic impact of the pandemic has already hit home with a delay to the giant offshore gas project that was set to generate extra revenue in the run-up to his likely re-election campaign in 2024.
