Washington seals the deal

Splits over US pressure to normalise ties with Israel point to a fall-out between civilian politicians and the generals

The removal of Sudan from the United States's list of state sponsors of terrorism, confirmed on 14 December, could prove a lifeline to a country in the grip of severe economic crisis, but talks about normalising ties with Israel have underscored tense relations between civilians and the military.
