Election bill deepens rivalries

Trumpeting their commitment to a democratic ethos, the two main parties argue over how to rewrite the electoral rules

For years the National Assembly in Abuja is lambasted as hosting among the best paid but least productive legislators. Then within the same month they steer through two of the most consequential bills in the past decade. Alongside the Petroleum Industry Bill they have passed the electoral reform bill, but not without swingeing criticism from the opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP) as it reached its final hurdle in the National Assembly.
